how to avoid virus in windows

How to identify the virus that have the icon of the document or other application:

our antivirus are updated frequently but that will unable to identify some virus. But when we use the removable medium(pen drive, external hard drive).  The some of the virus are have the icon of the document  we have  to identify and escape from them.

 How to escape from the document icon virus and other application icon viruses:

1.       Click start->control panel ->folder options ->view-> advanced settings-> click (select)->hide extensions for known file types -> apply and ok the document.

2.       How if any document or other software files icons have the  (.exe)  will must be the virus so it must be avoided and don’t open this files
